OSCAR W. UNDERWOOD. TLS: "O W Underwood" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. (Washington), 1916 November 17. To Mr. E.J. Gensler, Washington, D.C. In part: "I received your letter of the 9th instant this morning, in reference to the portraits of four of Alabama's former Senators...I understand that Judge Richard Walker...is a descendent of former Senator Walker...I have no information in reference to William Kelly and Isreal Pickens. As to Henry Chambers, of Madison, you may be able to obtain some information from Judge William L. Chambers...." Underwood represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from 1915-1927. He represented the U.S. as a member of the Conference on Limitation of Armament in 1921 and 1922. At the 1924 Democratic National Convention, Underwood's name led all 103 roll calls as Alabama cast their votes for their favorite son. On the 103rd ballot, Underwood finished second to the nominee John W. Davis. Folds, vertical fold at the "er" of Underwood. Some words underlined in red and blue pencil, shorthand notes in pencil at lower margin, penciled "Ala" at upper right margin (all unknown hand). Overall, fine condition.
