OTIS GUERNSEY
The long time editor of the annual Best Plays signs a Christmas card for John Willis, chief editor of Theatre World.
Christmas Card signed: "Otis Guernsey", 7¼x5½ closed, 7¼x11 open flat. Signed in ink below a printed Christmas and New Year's greeting. Winter scene on front of card. Otis L. Guernsey, Jr. (1918-2001) edited, or co-edited (with Burns Mantle) 36 annual editions of Best Plays, beginning in the late 1960s. This labor earned him a Drama Desk Honorary Award in 1996. Guernsey also edited a Directory of the American Theatre, and wrote at least one screenplay (13 Frightened Girls, 1963). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Moisture defects along left edge. Top edge lightly worn. Lightly stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
