Photograph signed: "Otis R Bowen". B/w, 8¼x10. American physician and politician Dr. Otis Ray Bowen (1918-2013) was the Republican Governor of Indiana from 1973-1981. He was the first Governor to serve for eight consecutive years since 1851. Bowen had previously been a member of Indiana's House of Representatives (1957-1958; 1961-1972, Speaker, 1967-1972). He was appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services by President Ronald Reagan, and was the first medical doctor to serve in the position (1985-1989). In addition to his political career, Bowen, who received his M.D. in 1942, is the holder of 30 honorary degrees, has had his own medical practice, served on the staffs of a number of Indiana hospitals, was Coroner for Marshall County, Indiana and was a clinical professor of family medicine at Indiana University. After his retirement in 1989, Bowen continued to serve his community as a member of several committees and conferences including; the Education Commission of the States, and the President's Commission on Federalism. He was the chairman of the Paperwork Commission, Nursing Study Commission, and Medicare Study Commission. The Bowen Institute on Political Participation was founded by Ball State University in honor of Bowen. He would attend every year and provided a congratulatory address to the graduates of this two-day seminar. After many years of success, Bowen passed away in 2013 at a nursing home in Donaldson, Indiana at age 95 and the cause of death is unknown. Edges slightly creased. Black mark at bottom edge. Minor surface creases and striations (most not evident head on), some at facial image. Otherwise, fine condition.
