Typed letter signed: "Otis R Bowen" as Governor of Indiana, 1p, 8½x11. Indianapolis, Indiana, October 3, 1973. On letterhead of "Office of the Governor/Otis R. Bowen, M.D./Governor" to Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your request and kind comments. I am most appreciative - and am pleased to send the enclosed to you. The list of living former governors of the state is as follows: [Bowen then lists five names, including Ralph F. Gates, George Craig, Roger Branigan, Matthew E. Welsh and Edgar D. Whitcomb, and gives their addresses]". The letter concludes: "Kindest personal regards". Enclosures not present. American physician and politician Dr. Otis Ray Bowen (1918-2013) was the Republican Governor of Indiana from 1973-1981. The first Governor to serve for eight years since 1851, Bowen had previously been a member of Indiana's House of Representatives (1957-1958; 1961-1972, Speaker, 1967-1972). Appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services by President Ronald Reagan, Bowen was the first medical doctor to serve in the position (1985-1989). In addition to his political career, Bowen, who received his M.D. in 1942 and is the holder of 30 honorary degrees, has had his own medical practice, served on the staffs of a number of Indiana hospitals, was Coroner for Marshall County, Indiana and was a clinical professor of family medicine at Indiana University.
