OTTO LUENING
The German-American composer/conductor pens a note of electronic music.
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "Otto Luening", 3½x3. He has penned a single note of electronic music. German-American composer and conductor Otto Luening (1900-1996), born in Milwaukee to German immigrants, moved to Munich in 1912 to study music, moving on to Switzerland during World War I. There he was also an actor and stage manager for James Joyce's English Players Company. He returned to the US in 1924, conducting operas in Chicago and at the Eastman School of Music. He premiered Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All, Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium, and his own Evangeline. Later he pioneered tape and electronic music, introducing "Fantasy in Space" (flute recordings manipulated on electronic tape) at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1952. With Vladimir Ussachevsky, he founded the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in 1958. Luening also set to music the words of many poets, including Wilde, Dickinson, Byron, Whitman, Blake Shelley and Goethe. Irregularly cut at edges. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
