OWEN CARDINAL McCANN
Typed Letter signed as Archbishop of Cape Town (1972), advocating world peace
Typed Letter signed: "+ Owen Cardinal McCann" as Archbishop of Cape Town, 1 page, 8x10. Cape Town, South Africa, 1972 April 12. On official letterhead (in English and Afrikaans), with his personal coat of arms, to David A. Marcus, Beverly Hills, California. In full: "I have to thank you for your letter of 30th March 1972, enclosing a copy of a letter sent to you at the behest of the Holy Father. I am certainly anxious to do all I can to bring about peace and tranquility in the whole world, and particularly on the local level. I have striven by sermons and statements to this affect. We have kept the World Day of Peace every year since its inception, and my people are constantly exhorted to pray for peace, while at Sunday Mass in the Prayers of the Faithful, we regularly pray for peace. With every good wish and blessing, I am, Yours sincerely in Christ". South African Catholic prelate Owen Cardinal McCann (1907-1994) was ordained a priest in 1935. He was editor of the South African Catholic newspaper Southern Cross (1941-1948, 1986-1991). As Archbishop of Cape Town (1951-1984), he was an outspoken opponent of apartheid. He joined the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town and the Chief Rabbi of Johannesburg in a call to investigate abuses of political prisoners (1971). He wrote an open letter to the Government (1976) calling for an end to segregation and for voting rights for blacks. Horizontal and Vertical fold creases in center. Minor notch on bottom left edge. Otherwise fine condition.
