He signs an agreement with Columbia Records to record Schubert's Unfinished Symphony during the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, a recording which was never made.
Documentary Letter signed: "Pablo Casals", 5 pages, 8½x11 Initialed five times, twice on the front page, and signed on the last page. He signs acceptance of a letter of agreement with Columbia Records to rehearse and record Schubert's Unfinished Symphony during the Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, April-May 1957. Casals was to receive 10% royalties on 90% of the recordings sold. Casals (1876-1973, born Pau Casals in Vendrell, Spain) achieved worldwide renown as a violoncellist, conductor and composer. Casals was so opposed to the Franco regime that he declined to appear in countries that recognized the totalitarian Spanish government, making an exception when he took part in a concert of chamber music in the White House on November 13, 1961, at the invitation of President Kennedy, whom he admired. Sadly, the recording anticipated in this document was never made. Casals fell ill, suffering a heart attack during rehearsals, and was unable to complete the project. File holes at upper margin. Staple at upper left corner. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
