Sale Price $324.00
Signed 10½x13¼ color magazine photo of 24 of the medals and honors awarded to cellist Pablo Casals. This photo appears to have been taken before 1971, when Casals won the United Nations Peace Medal.
Magazine photo signed "Pablo Casals" in blue ink. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. Color, 10½x13¼. Photo from an unknown magazine. This photo includes the United States Medal of Freedom, which Casals received in 1963. However, it doesn't include the United Nations Peace Medal, which he received in 1971. Casals (1876-1973, born Pau Casals in Vendrell, Spain) achieved worldwide renown as a violoncellist, conductor and composer. Casals was born near Barcelona, Spain, and was a patriot opposed to tyranny. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) established General Francisco Franco as dictator of a bloody totalitarian state. Casals was so opposed to the Franco regime that he declined to appear in countries that recognized the totalitarian Spanish government, making an exception when he took part in a concert of chamber music in the White House on November 13, 1961, at the invitation of President Kennedy, whom he admired. Lightly toned and creased. Signature has low contrast and poor adhesion in places, but is legible. Neatly torn from magazine at left edge. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
