PADRAIC COLUM. Autograph Letter signed: "Padraic Colum", 2p (front and verso), 6x9. Atlantic City, New Jersey, n.d. To "Dear Mrs Wainwright", in full: "I reached Atlantic City according to time-table and found my wife in the place where she said she'd be. So all is well. Or all would be well only for the rain. It requires some philosophy to enjoy a rained-on Atlantic City, however. My wife hopes very strongly that she will have the chance of meeting you. I've been telling her about your relation with Elinor Wylie. As for myself - I count it as a real piece of good fortune that I have been in your house and known you and Dr Wainwright. I am looking forward to seeing you again and hope that I shall be in New York when you come. Lee Keedrick will know where I am. Please give my salutations to the doctor and to your charming daughter-in-law. Your daughter, too. Very heartily hours". Ink has bled slightly at a few words of text. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied byautograph envelope, addressed in Colum's hand to "Mrs. J. M. Wainwright", Scranton, Pennsylvania, with cancellation grooves but no visible postmark. Slightly soiled. Minor tear at flap on verso. Otherwise, fine condition. Padraic Colum (1881-1972), Irish poet, dramatist and writer of children's books, is best known for his lyric poems, including "The Plougher" and "An Old Woman of the Roads", which first appeared in Wild Earth, his first book of verse (1907), and "She Moved Through the Fair" (1916).
