PAID MOVIE CAST: JOAN CRAWFORD, WILLIAM BAKEWELL and CHRISTINE CRAWFORD
Novelization of the 1930 Joan Crawford movie Paid, signed by Joan Crawford, her daughter Christine Crawford and actor William Bakewell
Book inscribed and signed: "To Art/Gratefully/Joan Crawford", "William Bakewell" and "To Art from -/Christina Crawford", 354p, 5¼x7½x1¼ with four single-sided pages of b/w photos. Copy of Paid by Marvin Dana. Published by Grosset & Dunlap of New York. ©1913 The H. K. Fly Company. Hardcover with dustcover. This book is a novelization of Paid (1930), one of several screen adaptations of Veiller's play Within the Law. Joan Crawford had the female lead as Mary Turner, while William Bakewell appeared in the supporting cast as B. M. Carney. This movie was released nine years before Christine Crawford's birth, so we're pretty sure she didn't appear in this movie. JOAN CRAWFORD (1904-1977) shot to stardom on the strength of 1928's Our Dancing Daughters, starring as Diana "Di" Medford, a role originally intended for Clara Bow. The film was hugely successful, and MGM soon doubled her salary and began featuring her name on marquees. Unlike so many stars of the period, Crawford successfully made the transformation from the silents to the sound era, although she preferred the silents. Crawford, originally a professional dancer, had made her film debut in 1925. She won a Best Actress Academy Award for Mildred Pierce (1945) and was nominated for Best Actress Oscars for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). A tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest (1978, later made into a feature film), by her daughter Christina, portrayed Crawford as unfeeling and ruthlessly ambitious. However, Crawford was a faithful correspondent with her large fan base. WILLIAM BAKEWELL (1908-1993) broke into film in 1925, and had some substantial roles early in the early talkie era, All Quiet On the Western Front (1930) being the best remembered of these, but was consigned mainly to supporting roles in the 1940s and later. He played Tobias Norton in the popular Walt Disney Davy Crockett TV Western dramas of the 1950s. Actress CHRISTINE CRAWFORD, born in 1939, the adopted daughter of actress Joan Crawford, wrote about the abuse she suffered at the hands of the film star in her 1978 book, Mommie Dearest, which spent 42 weeks on the bestseller list and was made into a film in 1981. Lightly toned. Dustcover is lightly scratched (not visible head-on), scuffed and creased and has light tears and cuts at top and bottom edge. Corners of cover and top and bottom edge of spine are rounded and worn. Top and bottom edges of cover are scuffed. Otherwise, fine condition.
