THE PALM BEACH STORY FILM CAST: JOEL McCREA and RUDY
VALLÉE
Joel McCrea and Rudy Vallée sign a black and white publicity
photograph of their film The Palm Beach Story.
Photograph signed: "Joel McCrea" and "This film
almost won me a/nomination/Rudy/Vallée". B/w, 10x8. Publicity photograph
from the 1942 film, The Palm Beach Story, in which McCrea played Tom
Jeffers and Vallée co-appeared as John D. Hackensacker II. The comedy also
featured Claudette Colbert (pictured here), Mary Astor and William Demarest.
Vallée won the Best Actor award from the National Board of Review (although
not an Oscar nomination) for his performance. JOEL McCREA
(1905-1990), who was a movie stunt double while still in high school and
appearing at the Pasadena Playhouse while at USC, made his film debut in 1927
and had his breakthrough role, in Jazz Age, two years later. In 1946,
after making The Virginian, McCrea concentrated on Westerns. In
addition to his long list of film credits, McCrea starred on the early 1950s
radio show, Tales of the Texas Rangers, and the 1959 TV series,
Wichita Town. From the mid-1920s to mid-1950s, RUDY VALLÉE (1901-1986)
enjoyed a successful career on radio (where he hosted a popular variety show
from 1929), in movies, in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act.
The first singer to be called a "crooner", he was known for carrying a small
megaphone. Vallée made a fine comeback in the Broadway hit How To Succeed In
Business Without Really Trying (1961). Defects from original negative have
reproduced on McCrea's suit. Fine condition.
