In 1976, she established Liz Claiborne, Inc. to produce moderately priced sportswear for women. In 1987, Claiborne, already President, was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. DONNA KARAN, who became one of America's top celebrity fashion designers, began her career as an intern with Anne Klein before branching out on her own in 1984. With her husband, Argentinean playwright Rafael Lopez-Cambil, she built a fashion and perfume empire that was generating over $825 million annually by the time the couple divorced in 1999.
