PANCHO GONZALEZ and ALFIE HOWARDBoth sign on this album leaf for a fan Autograph Note Signed "To Dora/Best wishes/Pancho Gonzalez" and on verso "Best Wishes/Alfie HowardTown Crier/London". 5¾x4½ album leaf, front and verso.. Ricardo Alonso "Pancho" Gonzalez (1928-1995) was probably as good as anyone who ever played the game of tennis, if not better. His Grand Slam record includes wins at the U.S. Open (singles, 1948-1949), the French Open (doubles, 1949) and Wimbledon (doubles, 1949). In 1968, at 40, he beat second-seeded Tony Roche to reach the quarters of the initial U.S. Open. A year later, this grandfather (literally) electrified Wimbledon (which had been open to pros) by overcoming Charlie Pasarel in the tournament's longest match, 112 games, a first-rounder that consumed 5 hours, 12 minutes, a major tourney record that stood until 1992. The 6-foot-3 Gonzales was especially noted for his great serve, which was once clocked at 112 mph. Alfie Howard (1912-2006) was the longest serving Town Crier in the history of Lambeth, London. He managed to create a niche for himself over the decades as part news-giver, part entertainer and promoter of tourism. He entertained in the pubs, moving from one to the next on Saturday nights wearing this 18th Century style hat and robes. He died at age 93. Binding holes atright edge. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
