PANCHO SEGURA
Signature from the International Tennis Hall of Famer
Signature: "Pancho Segura", in blue ink, 3¾x5¼. Ecuadoran Francisco Olegaria "Pancho" Segura (b. 1921) didn't look like champion material when he came to the United States in 1941, with his unorthodox two-handed forehand, bowed legs and tiny 5-foot-6 frame. But he came to the U. S. with the Ecuadoran title and a number of other Latin American titles on his belt, and he started winning in the U. S. and in the Grand Slam, too. He was a doubles finalist at the 1944 U. S. Open and 1946 French Open and a mixed finalist at the 1943 and 1947 U. S. Opens, and he also won the U. S. Intercollegiate singles three times in a row (1943-1945) and doubles in 1945, as well as the U. S. Pro Championships singles title three times in a row (1950-1952). Segura, who played into the 1960s, was overshadowed by Jack Kramer and Pancho Gonzalez and never made big money from tennis, but his wins spoke for themselves; he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1984. Adhesive residue on top edge. Top edge slightly frayed and notched. Light surface creases. Toned on outer margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
