PAT BOONE and BOBBY KAY
The two popular performers signed opposite sides of this album leaf for George R.
Sanders
Autograph Note signed: "George/enjoyed it/Encore! Encore!/Warm wishes/Pat Boone", 6½x6½
card affixed to a 7x9¼ album leaf (along with a 1¼x1¼ color photo). And on verso: "Bobby
Kay", 3½x2 card with printed text: "Bobby Kay/a Clown/Advance Promotion: Ringling
Brothers - Barnum & Bailey Circus." 3½x3½ newspaper photo of Kaye in a clown suit at a
typewriter is attached below the card. The George referred to in the note is none other than
George R. Sanders ; originally a disc jockey, he became a prominent radio/TV interview host,
first in Los Angeles and later in Portland. Pat Boone (b. 1934) is an immensely popular
recording star who was most popular in the late 1950s. Among the biggest of his 38 Top
40 hits were "Don't Forbid Me", "April Love" and "Love Letters in the Sand" (all from 1957).
He hosted a TV show (1957-1960) and appeared in 15 feature films, including Bernadine
and April Love (1957). His smooth style and clean cut good looks appealed not only to many
teens, but also to parents appalled by Elvis Presley and the rebellious side of rock and roll.
Most of his later successes came in Christian music, but his album No More Mr. Nice
Guy (1997), a tongue in cheek cover of heavy metal hits, angered many of his religious fans
who failed to get the joke. Bobby Kay (1908-1983) began his career as a circus clown in 1923.
The versatile Kaye also served as a publicist and advance man. In 1971, he joined the staff of
the Ringling Brothers - Barnum & Bailey Clown College, teaching makeup techniques. Fold
crease through Boone's signature. Ink numbers (unknown hand) at lower corners. Otherwise,
fine condition.
