PATTY HEARST
Rare signed photo of the heiress and kidnap victim turned bank robber
Photograph signed: "Patricia Hearst". Color, 6x9½ image, 8x10 overall (one surface). Patricia "Patty" Hearst (b. 1954), the granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst was a youthful socialite until kidnapped (February 4, 1974) by an obscure urban terrorist group, the Symbionese Liberatation Army. After a series of ransom negotiations fell through, Hearst participated, brandishing a carbine, in a San Francisco bank robbery on April 15, 1974, and issued statements supporting the revolutionary group. In September 1975, Hearst and other SLA members were captured, and she was charged with armed robbery. Opposing teams of high-powered lawyers, including F. Lee Bailey as head of Hearst's defense team, debated whether the heiress was a victim of brainwashing and "Stockholm Syndrome" resulting from her imprisonment, or whether she was "a rebel in search of a cause" who had joined the SLA of her own free will. In 1976, she was found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison. She served 22 months, her sentence commuted by President Carter. President Clinton extended her a full pardon on his last day in office. Now married (as Patricia Campbell Hearst Shaw) to her former bodyguard, and the mother of two children, she makes occasional acting appearances in films and television, gives infrequent interviews, and has co-authored a novel. Fine condition.
