PAUL B. DU CHAILLU
DuChaillu responds to a letter he received regarding questions he had asked!
Autograph Letter Signed: "Yours very truly/P.B Du Chaillu", 2p, 5x7, front and verso. New York, 1883 February 1. To: Messrs. Eaton, Lyon & Co. In full: "Gentlemen Your favor of Dec 14th was received for which receive my thanks. As you have kindly suggested that you would cheerfully answer my ques-tions after the holidays, pardon me if I ask you to do so on the enclosed circular. May I ask that the questions, be answered with great particularity as you you may be able to give them." Paul Belloni Du Chaillu, the son of a French trader, had spent his youth in Gabon, French Equatorial Africa. After immigrating to the U.S., he led an exploring expedition to central Africa (1855-1859), bringing back many previously unknown birds and animals, including the first gorillas seen in America. On his second expedition (1863-1865), he verified rumors about pygmy tribes living in the forests of central Africa. Among his books are Stories of the Gorilla Country (1868), Lost in the Jungle (1869) and The Country of the Dwarfs (1871). Du Chaillu, whose date of birth is given as 1831 and 1835 in different sources, died in 1903. Horizontal mailing folds. Ink date stamp at upper right margin. Corners creased and worn. Top and left edges lightly chipped. Lightly soiled. Left edge 2" diagonal tear 2¼ from lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
