PAUL DU CHAILLU
The anthropologist writes a letter to a friend in Boston and tells
her he regrets not being able to see her family while in town.
Autograph Letter signed: "Paul du Chaillu", 2 pages, 3½x5½.
14 Brimmer Street [Boston], 1899 April 2. On personal letterhead
to "Dear Miss May", in full: "Will you kindly accept a copy of
'Ivar the Viking'? [Item not included.] Should the perusal of its pages
seem dull to you please forgive the author. I regretted very much yesterday that
on account of a long delay on the road I did not come to Boston early enough to
make a visit to your mother and the family. I am going on the ten o'clock train
this morning. With kindest regards to you all, I remain Yours sincerely".
AnthropologistPaul Belloni du Chaillu (1831-1903), born in either
New Orleans or Paris (accounts differ as do dates of his birth), to a French
family, earned fame for his explorations of central Africa (1855-1865). He
proved to Europeans the long-rumored existence of the gorilla, and also had the
first European contact with the Pygmy peoples. In his later years, he turned his
attention to the early history of Scandinavia, writing several books
including Ivar the Viking, mentioned in this letter. Du Chaillu's
observations in Africa and Scandinavia - controversial at the time - proved
accurate in most cases. He was much in demand as a lecturer. Heavily toned on
face page. Corners worn. Normal mailing fold. Top left corner lightly torn.
Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
