PAUL BELLONI Du CHAILLU
Explorer and anthropologist Paul Belloni Du Chaillu wrote this letter in 1869 to apologize for the recipient for not being in during a recent visit.
Autograph letter signed "P.B. Du Chaillu". Pencil notations at bottom edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 4¼x7, 1 sheet folded. Written at "129 Mount Street", July 8, 1869. In full: "My dear Sir I was very sorry to be out of town when you kindly called upon me. I need not say that I would have been delighted to see you. I hope to be more fortunate another time. Should you come to London I Please write me a line and let me know where you stay Then I will do myself the honor of calling upon you Believe me dear Sir Yours very sincerely". Du Chaillu, the son of a French trader, spent his youth in Gabon, French Equatorial Africa. After immigrating to the U. S., he led an exploring expedition to central Africa (1855-1859) and brought back many previously unknown birds and animals, including the first gorillas seen in America. On his second expedition (1863-1865), he verified rumors of pygmy tribes living in the forests of central Africa. Among his books are Stories of the Gorilla Country (1868), Lost in the Jungle (1869) and The Country of the Dwarfs (1871). Du Chaillu's date of birth is given as 1831 and 1835 in different sources, and even he wasn't sure when he was born. He died in 1903. Lightly toned. Pen skipped in places while writing letter, but not signature. Mounting residue and paper loss on verso (no show-through). Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
