PAUL Du CHAILLU
African explorer who brought the first gorillas to America will lecture and show slides.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Paul DuChaillu", 2p, 4½x7, separate sheets. "The Marlborough", New York, 1898 October 11. To Mr. Monroe. In full: "On my return to New-York yesterday, I found your very kind letter waiting for me-I will be very happy to stay at the Technology Club and I thank you and the House Committee for your very kind invitation. Will you kindly thank the House Committee for me. The title of the lecture 'The great Equatorial African forest, Among the Gorillas, cannibals and Pygmies & dwarfs' I will bring with me about fifty slides. November 11th is agreeable to me. If convenient I may remain at the Club two or three days. Thanking you for your kind letter." In a postscript, he adds: "PS I should feel obliged if you would send to the Press a few invitations for my lecture." On an exploring expedition to central Africa (1856-1859), Paul Du Chaillu (1831-1903) brought back animal specimens that included the first gorillas ever seen in America. He made a second trip in 1863-1865. His books include Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa (1861), Stories of the Gorilla Country (1868), Lost in the Jungle (1869) and The Country of the Dwarfs (1871). Light vertical shading at left margin touches letters of text. Irregular left edges from letter being separated. Fine condition.
