Remarkable self-caricature formed from sentences, including "Since I'm not an artist, I can make pictures only with words."
Self-Caricature signed: "Paul Bowles", in full: "Dear Mr. Hemminger - Since I'm not an artist, I can make pictures only with words, so it seemed to me the best idea to use words here. I've been unable to answer your letter before this because I had groups of students and a public session to organize. So forgive my tardiness in replying.", 8½x11. Typed address in Tangier, Morocco and date: August 15, 1981. He has shaped this written response into a bust view self-caricature. Expatriate American author and composer Paul Bowles (1910-1999) began composing music for the theatre in the 1930s, and left behind a considerable musical legacy, including an opera, Yerma, which gets frequent radio play. He is even better known as an author. His first novel, The Sheltering Sky, was published in 1949. (Bowles makes a cameo appearance in the 1990 film version.) In all, he wrote 5 novels, and many poetry and short story collections. His books, it has been noted, are as dark as his music is light. Living in Tangier, Morocco from 1947, he also collected and translated many folk tales and folk music from that country and others. Creased from folds. Fine condition.
