PAUL DRAPER
The dancer sends requested materials to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World
Autograph letter signed: "Paul Draper", in black ink, 1 page, 6¼x8. June 28, 1960. In full: "Dear Bill Willis - If for any reason these are unsatisfactory, don't hesitate to let me know [items not enclosed]. Sincerely". Post script: "Am enclosing a brochure for future reference [items not enclosed]". Paul Draper (1909-1996) was an American tap dancer and choreographer who introduced many new techniques to the art form. His unique style, sometimes called ballet-tap, also incorporated folk dances and diverse music, including classical music. He often performed with harmonica player Larry Adler. Draper was also an influential dance teacher. He can be seen in the 1948 film Time of Your Life. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tonyfor Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Edges frayed and worn. Surface creases. Ink notes on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
