PAUL DUDLEY WHITE. ALS: " Paul D. White" on verso of 5½x3¼ postcard. 8-cent imprinted U.S. Air Mail postcard, postmarkedBoston, Massachusetts, 1970 November 24. Addressed in White's hand to: "George R. Sanders, Jr./KWJJ Broadcasting Company/931 Southwest King Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97205". In full: "I have signed and am sending back the photograph of ourselves and the medal. [not included] I don't clearly recall the occasion and date and place thereof. Will you please inform me. Best wishes". White's printed address at upper left margin of front. Paul Dudley White (1886-1973) joined the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital in 1911, and soon thereafter worked with Dr. R.I. Lee to develop the Lee-White Method for measuring blood coagulation, still widely used. Volunteering his medical services to the British before the U.S. entered WWI, White stayed on after the war to help fight a typhus epidemic in Greece. Returning to Mass General in 1919, he established the Cardiac Unit and, in 1931, published Heart Diseases, a landmark work. White treated President Eisenhower after his 1955 heart attack, and it was said that the two optimists got Ike through it together. A founder of the American Heart Association, White was also a strong advocate of exercise for fitness. A 17-mile bike trail in the Boston area is named in his honor. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
