PAUL E. TSONGAS
Letter as US Senator to an executive of US Gypsum
Typed Letter signed: "Paul" as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, 1p, 8½x11. Boston, Massachusetts, 1981 April 14. On United States Senate, Select Committee on Small Business letterhead to Mr. John S. Bush, Jr., Vice President, United States Gypsum Co., Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for your recent letter and annual report. I am, indeed, familiar with your Charlestown facility and appreciate the eight-thousand plus jobs it contributes to our state's economy. Frequently, on my visits to the state I try to meet with major employers and although my visit to Charlestown last month did not allow time to stop by your plant, I will try to do so on my next Charlestown tour. In the meantime, I have asked Isaac Graves of my economic development staff in Boston to contact Mr. Mauer to see if we can be of any assistance to you. Thank you for writing, and I appreciate your efforts in energy conservation. Sincerely". Paul Efthemios Tsongas (1941-1997) was a Democratic U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1979-1985, the first former Peace Corps volunteer ever elected to the Senate. An attorney who had begun his career in local politics in 1969, Tsongas had previously served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts (1975-1979). In 1992, he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, beaten out by Bill Clinton. A liberal on social issues but centrist on economic ones, he was a leader of the Concord Coalition, which championed a balanced federal budget. His widow, Niki Tsongas, was elected to his old Congressional seat in a special 2007 election, and has since been re-elected twice. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Underlined in red pencil at two places. Ink notes (unknown hand) at lower margin and upper left corner. Staple holes at upper left margin, receipt stamp at upper right margin. Fine condition.
