His works include The Bronte Sisters, The Art of Thinking
(both 1930) and What We Live By (1932). American author PAUL
ENGLE (1908-1991) was best remembered as the director of Iowa Writers'
Workshop, in addition to his poems, novels, literary critiques, and plays.
Although often confused as the creator of the Workshop, Engle only served as the
director, though he arguably contributed the most input and dedication. His
leadership helped attract several prominent writers to Iowa including Robert
Lowell, John Berryman, Robie Macauley, and Kurt Vonnegut. He also oversaw
the work of future writers Flannery O'Connor and Raymond Carver. After
staying with the program for over 20 years, Engle left permanently in 1969 to
run the University of Iowa's International Writing Program with his wife,
earning a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for his work. Among his writings
include a novel, a memoir, collections of poetry, and a libretto. SUSAN ERTZ
(1894-1985) was a British novelist, publishing 22 works in her
career. Her novels tended to focus on a sheltered female character that is
put out into harsh society, and has to overcome trials and tribulations in order
to survive. Most popular of her novels is her The Proselyte, which
follows the marriage of a British woman to an American Mormon man. Her 1960
novel In the Cool of the Day was turned into a film starring Jane
Fonda. Binding holes on left margin. Heavily toned. Fine
