PAUL H. TODD, JR.
The one-term Congressman and businessman signed this card in blue ink
Signature: “Paul H. Todd” in blue ink on a 3½x2 card. Paul Todd, Jr. (1921-2008) was one
of the Michigan Five Fluke Freshman, a group of democratic congressmen representing a
district in Michigan who all served one term from 1965-1967 and never won their seat again.
None of the five ever held a seat in Congress again. In 1964, all five men overturned
Republican incumbents with help from the popularity of Lyndon B. Johnson and the recent
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The 1966 election cycle proved more difficult, as
it followed unpopular Johnson legislation and race riots, as well as the surging popularity of
Michigan Republican Governor George W. Romney. Before his brief time in Congress, Todd
served in the United States Army Signal Corps and founded a business, the Kalamazoo Spice
Extraction Co. This family-owned business still operates today under the name Kalsec.
From 1967-1970, Todd was hired as the CEO of Planned Parenthood. Todd came from a
political family: his father Paul Todd Sr. and uncle Albert J. Todd were both elected as
Mayors of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and his grandfather Albert M. Todd was a
Congressman. Name in pencil on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
