PAUL HENREID
Freelance employment contract with RKO Radio Pictures, signed by actor Paul Henreid in 1941
Contract signed "Paul Henreid" as artist's true name and "Paul Henrie" as artist's professional name. Also signed by an assistant secretary for RKO Radio Pictures. Lead pencil and black ink notations in unknown hand. 57 pages including covers, 8½x13, with four file holes at top edge. March 6, 1941. By signing this freelance contract (which lists his name on the cover as "PAUL HERNDON", corrected in black ink), Henreid gave RKO Radio options to use him in as many as 19 movies between April 1, 1941 and Oct. 31, 1947, with his weekly salary rising from $1,667 for the first movie to $6, 250 for the eighteenth and nineteenth. Henreid appeared in 2 RKO Radio films during the period of this contract: Joan of Paris (1942) and The Spanish Main (1944). Born Paul George Julius von Hernreid in Trieste (now in Italy, then in the Austrian empire), Henreid (1908-1992) was originally cast in supporting roles, often as Germanic villains. After 1940, when he moved to Hollywood and became a U. S. citizen, Henreid began to get starring roles. These included Now Voyager (1942) and Of Human Bondage (1946), but his most famous role was that of resistance leader Viktor Lazslo, Humphrey Bogart's rival for the affections of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942). Henreid could also swashbuckle, as in Buccaneers (1950). From the 1950s onward, Henreid focused on directing films (Dead Ringer, 1964) and TV episodes (Alfred Hitchcock Presents). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Pages 18 and 19 are paper clipped together at right edge. Lightly dented at right edge. Top edge of front cover and left and right edges of back cover are lightly torn. Lightly discolored at top edge. Paper clip impression at top left corner. Random ink stains. Otherwise in fine condition.
