PAUL LÖBE
Paul Löbe handwrote and signed this letter in partially translated German on Reichstag letterhead in 1921, one year after he joined the Reichstag, about his Christmas bonus. Accompanied by an unsigned b/w picture postcard of Löbe.
Autograph letter signed "P Löbe". 2 pages, 5¼x8½, 1 sheet front and verso, on letterhead of the Reichstag in Berlin, Germany. Dec. 26, 1921. In German, partially translated: "Distinguished Colleague! By encouragement of Councilor of Commerce, Mr. Löhm [illegible] and with your kind agreement, Dr. Mirdeler [illegible] approved my Christmas bonus. Now, Dr. Nathan is asking me for the same for both gentlemen, Dr. Ell and Werre [illegible]. What do you think about it? Would you have the kindliness to discuss the matter with our Mr. [illegible]. It would be for a one year's authorization. Dr. Nathan believed also that we in case of the [illegible] should commit the concerned companies to pay a broker fee to Mr. Werre for every [illegible]... With best wishes for the new year I remain your obedient". This letter appears to be written almost completely in the now-abandoned Suetterlin alphabet. Lightly creased. Lightly torn on left edge. Paper clip impression on left edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Letter has separated slightly along folds. Separations touch handwriting and signature. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned picture post card with a b/w headshot of Löbe. Captioned in German, translated: "PAUL LOEBE, M. d. R. - Reichstagspräsident von 1920-1932". Photo by Otto Kurt Vogelsang, Berlin, Germany. Post card by Republikanische Werbstelle des Fackelreiter-Verlages of Berlin, Germany. Blank message side. Lightly toned. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Paperclip impression in upper left corner. Löbe (1875-1967, born in Liegnitz, Prussia, Germany, now Legnica, Poland) was a German politician who was imprisoned by the Nazis twice during their reign. His political life began in 1898, when he founded the local branch of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany. He was the editor of Volkswacht in Breslau and was frequently jailed for his editorial work. He became vice president of the Weimar National Assembly in 1919 and was a member of Germany's Reichstag from 1920 to 1933, serving as president twice and vice-president once. The Nazis imprisoned him in 1933 during the Machtergriefung, when they took power in the Reichstag; he was vice-president of the Reichstag at the time. They imprisoned him again in 1944, due to his connections with a member of the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler. He continued his political work from 1948 to 1953, becoming a member of Germany's Bundestag from 1949 to 1953.
