PAUL ROBESON and ELISABETH SCHUMANN
Robeson signs "Best Wishes" on a small 6x5¼ card, including a signature of Schumann on the verso
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Wishes/Paul Robeson" and, on verso, "Elisabeth Schumann", 6x5¼. Magazine photograph of Robeson, b/w with brown hue, 2¼x3¼, affixed at lower right margin. Actor, singer and athlete PAUL ROBESON (1898-1976), who was praised as an "eloquent, impressive, and convincing" actor, was tapped by playwright Eugene O'Neill to star in a revival of his The Emperor Jones (1924). Robeson later premiered in O'Neill's All God's Chillun Got Wings, but it was perhaps his rendition of "Ol' Man River" from Show Boat that brought him widest acclaim. Robeson's commanding presence and resonant bass voice were equally impressive in his efforts to urge Blacks to embrace their African heritage. German soprano ELISABETH SCHUMANN (1888-1952) had made her operatic debut in Hamburg in 1909. Best known for her interpretations of Mozart, Wagner, Bach and Schubert, she moved to the U.S. in 1938 and taught singing at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Slightly creased. Lightly soiled at upper blank margin, paper remnant at upper left blank edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
