19, 1984. Addressed to Mr. Todd Axelrod, Las Vegas, Nevada. In full:
"Dear Mr. Axelrod: Ace has forwarded to me the copy of your book,
Collecting Historical Documents. It's a fascinating book,
and I'm looking forward to perusing it during my free moments. Thanks so much
for thinking of me. Sincerely, PAUL LAXALT U. S. SENATOR". Lightly creased.
Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by:
Original mailing envelope from Laxalt's personalized U. S. Senate
stationery, with his signature stamped on front in blue ink. 6¼x4½. Addressed to
Mr. Todd Axelrod, Las Vegas, Nevada. Lightly creased. Neatly cut open at top
edge. Otherwise in fine condition. "Ace" is probably ACE ROBISON,
Laxalt's Chief of Staff during his time in the U. S. Senate. PAUL
LAXALT, born in 1922, was a close friend and confidante of President
Reagan and chairman of all three Reagan presidential bids (1976, 1980,
1984). He was also Governor of Nevada (1967-1971) and a U. S. Senator
(1974-1987). He married his first wife Jacalyn Ross in 1946. With their 6
children, they were the largest family ever to occupy the Nevada governor's
mansion. Paul and Jaclyn divorced in 1972; she died in 2004. Laxalt's father was
a Basque immigrant sheepherder. Paul's brother Robert Laxalt (1924-2001) wrote
several books about the Basque experience in America.
