PAUL LIPSON
The actor sends a picture of him without his beard to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World
Autograph letter signed: "Paul", in blue ink, 1 page, 6x7. April 24, 1977. New York City, New York. In full: "Dear Jack, Enclosed is current picture of me without beard as per phone conversation [items not included]. 'Fiddler' is closing May 21st and beard will probably depart soon afterwards. Best". Actor Paul Lipson (1913-1995) is best known as one of Zero Mostel's successors as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, which originally ran on Broadway from 1964-1972. In revivals of the play in 1976-1977 and 1981, he played Lazar Wolf, the butcher. Lipson also appeared on The Great White Way in Heads or Tails (1947, his debut), Remains to be Seen (1951-1952), I've Got Sixpence (1952), Carnival in Flanders (1953) and The Vamp (1955). He also appeared in one feature film, Pretty Boy Floyd (1960), the made-for-TV movie, Where Is Thy Brother? (1958), and guest starred in three episodes of Car 54, Where Are You? in 1962. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Right margin heavily creased. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
