PAUL BLOUET (MAX O'RELL)
The French comedy writer and journalist who travelled frequently among the United
States, the United Kingdom, and France signed this handwritten letter dated August 23,
1893
Autograph Letter Signed: “Paul Blouet”. 4x6. Two pages. Dated August 23, 1893. Written
from Devonshire, England. In Part: “I have just returned from a two years' tour (America,
Australia and South Africa) and have found your communication of Dec. 4th awaiting me. I
should be very pleased to join your [illegible] (if not too late), but on condition I should not be
compelled to give a contribution monthly. Kindly remember me to my Philadelphia friends,
particularly to M. Stoddard and [illegible]”. Paul Blouet (1847-1903), also known by his pen
name Max O'Rell, was a hugely popular French author whose comedic anecdotes about
French and English customs won him fans throughout the Western world. In Mark
Twain-esque fashion, he conducted lecture tours throughout Europe and the United States.
His first publication, John Bull and his Island (1883), was translated into 17 languages.
He frequently clashed with Mark Twain himself, with his pen and, allegedly, with his
fists. Toned. Letter split in half along mailing crease.
