PAUL MUNI and HARRY CAREY, SR.
The Oscar-winning actor and the Oscar-nominated Western star both sign their name in black ink
Signatures: "Paul Muni" and, on verso, "Harry Carey", 5½x2¼. PAUL MUNI (1895-1967) was nominated for the 1928-1929 Academy Award for Best Actor for his first feature film role, drifter James Dyke, in The Valiant. He was also nominated for Best Actor Oscars for roles in I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932-1933), The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and The Last Angry Man (1959), winning the statuette for his portrayal of Louis Pasteur. HARRY CAREY, SR. (1878-1947), born Henry De Witt Carey II, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the President of the Senate in the 1939 film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Carey, who appeared in over 250 films, began his career in the silents before becoming a "B" movie cowboy actor (often as "Cheyenne Harry") and then a character actor in "A" films. The father of actor Harry Carey, Jr., Harry Sr. was seen posthumously with his son in the 1948 film, Red River, which also starred John Wayne. Two of his other films, So Dear to My Heart and The Babe Ruth Story, were also released after Carey's death. Carey had also been a writer, director (1914-1916) and producer (1914-1920). Ink slightly smudged at the "i" of Muni. Muni's name written in ink (unknown hand) at upper margin, Carey's name written in unknown hand at lower margin of verso. Slightly creased, lightly shaded at blank left edge. Irregular right edge from removal from bound book. Otherwise, fine condition.
