PAUL MUNI and LILLIAN ROTH
Signed by the Academy Award-winning actor and the Broadway and film actress
Autograph note signed: "To John/Sincerely yours/Paul Muni", and "To John/Best wishes/Lillian Roth/Scott", on verso. 7x9½. PAUL MUNI (1895-1967) was nominated for the 1928-1929 Academy Award for Best Actor for his first feature film role, drifter James Dyke in The Valiant. He was also nominated for Best Actor Oscars for roles in I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932-1933), The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and The Last Angry Man (1959), winning for his portrayal of Louis Pasteur. LILLIAN ROTH (1910-1980), born Lillian Rutstein in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American singer and actress. The actress began her professional career at six years old, when she modeled as a living statue holding a lamp of knowledge for the Educational Pictures trademark, and debuted on Broadway in Penrod in 1918. In all, she had 20 TV and movie credits, with most between 1929 and 1934, and sang in over 10 movies. She also appeared in a total of nine Broadway shows, with most of these between 1918 and 1932. But Roth was an alcoholic and hit the skids in the 1930s. She married and divorced a total of five times in her life, with the first four marriages ending before 1945. Roth retired from films after 1934's Masks and Memories and became a nightclub singer; she returned to the cinema over 40 years later with 1976's Communion. Roth released her autobiography I'll Cry Tomorrow in 1954. It was adapted into a movie in 1955; Susan Hayward was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Roth. Lightly toned and worn at edges and corners. Neatly torn from notebook or album at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
