PAUL MUNI
The Oscar-winning actor signs this typed letter of thanks on his
personalized stationery in 1955 to the Oscar winning composer Johnny
Green.
Typed letter signed: "Paul Muni", 1p, 7¼x9¼. Encino,
California, 1953 April 4. To composer Johnny Green. In full:
"Although somewhat belated, I hope you will accept my sincere appreciation
and thanks for your friendly words, though formal (as expressed in your letter)
were nevertheless heartwarming. My contribution was of such minor importance
that I feel only your tolerant and good nature could give it an emphasis beyond
its worth." PAUL MUNI (1895-1967) was nominated for the
1928-1929 Academy Award for Best Actor for his first feature film role, drifter
James Dyke in The Valiant. He was also nominated for Best
Actor Oscars for roles in I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
(1932-1933), The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), The Life of
Emile Zola (1937) and The Last Angry Man (1959), winning
for his portrayal of Louis Pasteur. JOHNNY GREEN (1908-1989) won
Academy Awards for Best Score of Easter Parade, An American in
Paris, Oliver and West Side Story. From 1949-1958, he was
MGM's Music Director. It is possible that Muni had helped Green in an MGM
production. Mounting remnant on verso (light show through at upper blank
margin). File holes at upper blank margin. Red file note (unknown hand) at upper
left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
