"Pete" McCloskey, Jr. (b. 1927) was a highly decorated Marine Corps veteran
of the Korean War. After having volunteered to return to active duty to
serve in Vietnam, McCloskey turned against the war, and defeated
former child film star Shirley Temple Black in a Republican primary on his way
to representing California in the US Congress (1967-1983). The maverick
McCloskey challenged President Nixon for the Republican nomination in
1972. The following year, he co-authored the Endangered Species Act,
and was the first member of Congress to call for Nixon's impeachment. After
losing a heated primary battle for a Senate nomination, McCloskey retired from
electoral politics, but returned to the fray in 2006 in an unsuccessful bid to
unseat conservative Republican Congressman Richard Pombo. (McCloskey then
endorsed Democrat Jerry McNerney, who did defeat Pombo.) McCloskey, the author
of several books, switched his party affiliation to Democrat in 2007. Normal
mailing folds. Lightly creased at edges. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso with
slight show-through at lower left. Otherwise, fine condition.
