In the year this film was released, Newman also starred in Absence of Malice, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Nominated for eight Academy Awards for Best Actor, Newman (1925-2008, born in Shaker Heights, Ohio) won the 1987 Oscar for portraying Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money, the same character he played in The Hustler 25 years earlier (also Oscar nominated).
