Filmed four years after the box office smash Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting reunited Paul Newman, Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill. The film, which starred Newman as Henry Gondorff/Mr. Shaw and Redford as Johnny Hooker/Kelly, was among the top grossing films of 1973, raking in $78.212 million at the box office. The Sting won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Hill), Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted or Original Song Score, Best Editing, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design and was nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Redford), Best Cinematography and Best Sound. In the year he signed this document, Newman also appeared in Slap Shot. Nominated for eight Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Paul Newman (1925-2008) is considered one of greatest of performers of all time.. He won the Best Actor Oscar for his work portraying Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money (1986); he earned a nomination for portraying that same character 25 years earlier in The Hustler. Other Oscar-nominated performances include Brick Pollitt in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Luke Jackson in Cool Hand Luke (1967), and John Rooney in Road to Perdition (2002).
