He won the Best Actor Oscar for his work portraying Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money (1986); he earned a nomination for portraying that same character 25 years earlier in The Hustler. Other Oscar-nominated performances include Brick Pollitt in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Luke Jackson in Cool Hand Luke (1967), and John Rooney in Road to Perdition (2002).
