O'Dwyer (1907-1998) sought out labor and civil rights causes. An
opponent of US involvement in World War II, he was a passionate
supporter of Irish nationalism, defending IRA members against
deportation, and also of Israeli statehood. He was the Democratic
nominee for US Senate in 1968, running in opposition to the Vietnam War, but
losing to the incumbent, Jacob Javits. O'Dwyer's older brother (17 years his
senior) was William O'Dwyer, Mayor of New York. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on
