PAUL RICHARDS
Signed autograph note on a postcard, apparently responded to a question about his best baseball memory
Autograph Note signed: "7th game of World Series 1945. Cubs vs Detroit. Paul Richards", 5½x3¼. Return address label on verso, postmarked US Postal Service, Texas, November 26, 1973. Captioned magazine photo of Richards affixed there with clear tape. Paul Richards (1908-1976) caught for three Major League teams (New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia A's) in the mid-1930s and returned to the Majors with the Detroit Tigers during World War II (1943-1946), having spent the intervening years with the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association. A fine defensive catcher, known for throwing out base runners and handling pitchers, Richards was normally a weak hitter. It's no wonder that he singles out Game Seven of the 1945 World Series, because he hit two doubles in that game and drove in four runs, as his Tigers beat the Cubs. Richards spent four more decades in professional baseball as a manager (White Sox and Orioles) and General Manager (Orioles and Braves). While he never won a pennant as manager, he recruited many talented young players who became stars later, such as the Orioles' Brooks Robinson. Lightly toned. Otherwise fine condition.
