PAUL W. GALLICO and ANNA SOSENKO
Paul W. Gallico signs a 1946 contract with theatrical manager Anna Sosenko to appear on Hildegarde's radio show.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "Paul W. Gallico" and "Anna Sosenko", 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1946 January 11. This is Paul W. Gallico's William Morris Agency contract, in which he agrees to appear on her January 16, 1946 show from 8:30 PM to 9 PM, for $200.00. Also signed by Gallico's agent. American journalist and author PAUL WILLIAM GALLICO (1897-1976) wrote The Zoo Gang in 1971; it aired as a British TV series in 1974. Books written by Gallico, a former movie critic and sports writer, include The Snow Goose (1941) and The Poseidon Adventure (1969), books for children (such as Matilda, 1970) and books about cats. While sports editor for the New York "Daily News" (1923-1936), Gallico founded the Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament. A business manager and producer in an industry dominated by men, ANNA SOSENKO died on June 9, 2000, four days before her 91st birthday, in her Manhattan apartment. Miss Sosenko had been the manager of Hildegarde, one of the most celebrated cabaret stars of the 1930s and 1940s. Miss Sosenko wrote the song, "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" for her and also created a hit radio talk show, The Raleigh Room, for Hildegarde. Over the last quarter century, Miss Sosenko put her vast knowledge of theatre and music to work, conceiving and producing star-studded musical evenings that honored the greats of the theatre. A congenial, outspoken and intense woman, Anna Sosenko probably knew more of the great stars of the theatre of the last 60 years than anyone. The success of Berle's first television series, The Texaco Star Theater (1948-1953), proved that television could compete effectively with radio, stage and screen as an entertainment medium. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
