His handwritten note to interview host George Sanders
Autograph note signed: "To/George-/Best Wishes/Paul Williams", 5¼x7¾. Circa 1978. Magazine photo, b/w, 1½x1½, affixed at lower left corner. Ink notes and date (unknown hand) at lower margin: "Composer - Academy Award for Best Song: 'Evergreen' from 'A Star is Born - 1976 - Grammy Award Winner/January 19, 1978". While diminutive musical prodigy Paul Williams enjoys acting and has appeared in a number of films, he is best known as a songwriter. In collaboration with other songwriters, including Biff Rose, Roger Nichols and Charles Fox, he turned out a number of hits, including "We've Only Just Begun", "You and Me Against the World", "Old Fashioned Love Song" and "That's What Friends Are For". Williams has also been nominated for Academy Awards for his contributions to Phantom of the Paradise (1974, in which he also starred), Bugsy Malone (1975) and The Muppet Movie (1979), and he and Barbra Streisand received Oscars for "Evergreen", the hit song from her remake of A Star is Born (1976). Williams, who also contributed to the scores of Ishtar (1987) and Betsy's Wedding (1990), has appeared on the big screen in films including three Smokey and the Bandit movies (1977, 1980, 1983), Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1983) and Cinderella Liberty (1983), and television films including The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976) and The Wild Wild West Returns (1979). Williams, who was the voice of the Penguin on Batman: The Animated Series (1992), was also a popular guest on TV variety, talk and game shows. One of his hosts was Portland radio/TV personality George Sanders, who collected autographs like this one from guests on his show. Frayed left edge. Pinhead-sized spot at left center. Overall, fine condition.
