Paul Winchell signs a document with Roncom Productions, Inc. to
appear on The Julius La Rosa Show.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "Paul Winchell" as
Performer and initialed: "PW" twice on verso of first page
and nine times at right margins of pages containing changes to the
contract, 2p, 8½x11, front and verso, with four additional sheets headed
"Additions Not Part of Standard Form". No place, 1956 June 28. Standard
AFTRA Engagement Contract form on which Roncom Productions, Inc. hires
Winchell to appear on The Julius La Rosa Show, to be aired on NBC on July
21, 1956. Rehearsals were set to commence on July 18. Winchell, who was
to billed as a "Guest Star" was to be paid a "Special Price" of $3500.
Winchell has also filled in his telephone number and social security number
(blacked out on scan) under his signature and written: "Mutally agreed
upon" at left margin of first page of additions. Also signed by a
Secretary for Roncom Productions, Inc. Winchell, like La Rosa, starred in his
own television shows: The Paul Winchell Show (originally called
The Speidel Show, then The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show)
aired on NBC from 1950-1956 and on ABC from 1957-1960. Ventriloquist Paul
Winchell (1922-2005) and his puppets, Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff (who
are now housed in the Smithsonian Institution), appeared on various shows in
the 1960s. An amateur inventor, who had a patent on an early artificial heart,
Winchell was the voice of several cartoon characters, including Tigger in
Disney's Winnie-the-Pooh films (winning a Grammy for a children's
recording as Tigger in 1974). Lightly creased. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower
left edge of signature page, which is also stamped at 2 places. Staple holes at
upper left blank corners of all sheets. ¼-inch tears at lower blank edges of
pages 1 and 2 of additional sheets, chipped at mid-left blank edge of last page.
