PAUL WINCHELL
The popular TV ventriloquist retains an agent to represent him but not his puppets.
Document signed: "Paul Winchell", 2p (front and verso), 8¼x13¾. Also initialed: "P.W." Beverly Hills, California, 1963 September 26. On letterhead of the William Morris Agency, Winchell engages the Agency as his exclusive agent for a term of three years, commencing on the date of the contract. Winchell initials an added, typed clause to the contract: "The use in the merchandising and commercial tie up fields of the Jerry Mahoney, Knucklehead Smiff or other puppet characters I may own, completely, separately and apart from the television series and/or the creative properties and/or package shows referred to herein, shall be excluded from the scope of this agreement. However, if any of the said puppet characters are used in the merchandising and/or commercial tie up fields and these television series and/or creative properties and/or package shows, referred to herein, is tied in as an integral part, then the gross proceeds from such specific use shall be commissionable to you hereunder." The Paul Winchell Show (originally called The Speidel Show, then The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show) was on NBC from 1950-1956 and on ABC from 1957-1960. Ventriloquist Paul Winchell and his puppets Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff appeared on various shows in the 1960s. The versatile Winchell (1922-2005) was also a successful amateur inventor and a voice-over in many animated films, including the Grammy-winning voice of Winnie-the-Pooh's pal, Tigger. Binder and staple holes at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
