PAULINE FREDERICK
Shown as the stern matriarch she often played in her later films, inscribed
in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Sincerely/Pauline Frederick".
B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: April 24,
1937. Originally a stage actress with numerous Broadway credits, Frederick
(1883-1938) became a star of silent films, as in Smouldering Fires
(1925). She played mainly character roles in the talking 1930s, her last
film before her death from cancer being Thank You, Mr Moto (1937). As a
character actress, she often played intimidating older women like the one she
portrays here. Saul Goodman
(1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and
theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other
autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy
photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Lightly creased. Some
light contrast to inscription. Otherwise, fine condition.
