NBC News. New York, 1967 July 19. To Eddie Sousa, San Leandro,
California. In full: "I am happy to send you the enclosed autographed
photograph. I do hope your health has improved permanently. I am sorry that I do
not have the facilities for offering stamps. Sincerely." Pauline Frederick
(1906-1990), who served as the "Voice of the United Nations" for NBC for 21
years, is credited with opening many doors for women in journalism.
Although she began her career reporting on "women's issues", after the end of
WWII her reports on the Nuremberg trials, China's admission to the U.N. and the
Korean War, paved the way for women to be taken seriously as news broadcasters.
Frederick reported for ABC (1946-1953), NBC (1953-1974) and National Public
Radio. She was the first woman to receive the Peabody and DuPont Awards for
news broadcasting and was the first woman to be elected President of the
U.N. Correspondents Association. In 1976, Pauline Frederick Robbins
became the first woman to moderate a presidential candidates' debate,
presiding over the televised meeting of Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter.
