PAULINE FREDERICK
Trailblazing television news correspondent.
Typed Letter signed: "Pauline Frederick", 1p, 7¼x10¼. On letterhead of NBC News. New York, 1967 July 19. To Eddie Sousa, San Leandro, California. In full: "I am happy to send you the enclosed autographed photograph. I do hope your health has improved permanently. I am sorry that I do not have the facilities for offering stamps. Sincerely." Pauline Frederick (1906-1990), who served as the "Voice of the United Nations" for NBC for 21 years, is credited with opening many doors for women in journalism. Although she began her career reporting on "women's issues", after the end of WWII her reports on the Nuremberg trials, China's admission to the U.N. and the Korean War, paved the way for women to be taken seriously as news broadcasters. Frederick reported for ABC (1946-1953), NBC (1953-1974) and National Public Radio. She was the first woman to receive the Peabody and DuPont Awards for news broadcasting and was the first woman to be elected President of the U.N. Correspondents Association. In 1976, Pauline Frederick Robbins became the first woman to moderate a presidential candidates' debate, presiding over the televised meeting of Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter. Slightly soiled. Lightly creased in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
