Pauline Emily Mills McGibbon (1910-2001) was not only the first woman Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, but she was also the first woman to represent the Queen in Canada and in the Commonwealth. McGibbon, who served as Lieutenant Governor from 1974-1980, expanded the role, traveling extensively to meet the people she represented and opening her official suite to thousands of visitors. McGibbons, who also strongly supported the arts during her term, had married her husband, Donald McGibbon, in 1935. Before becoming Lieutenant Governor, she had served as the first woman President of the University of Toronto Alumni Association (1952-1953) and as the University's first woman Chancellor (1971-1974). McGibbon was also the first woman Governor of Upper Canada College (1971-1974), and she pursued her interests in the theatre and the arts in such positions as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Theatre School (1966-1969) and first woman President of the Canadian Conference of the Arts (1972-1973). After leaving office, McGibbon continued her public service by becoming first woman Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre (1980-1984) and Director of Massey Hall-Roy Thomson Hall (1980-1990). Her many honors include Officer of the Order of Canada (1967), Companion of the Order of Canada (1980) and the Order of Ontario (1988) as well as numerous honorary awards and degrees.
