PEARL BAILEY. TLS: "Pearl Bailey", 1p, 8½x11. Hollywood, California, 1970 November 25. On letterhead of Pearl Bailey Production Corp. to "Dear Mr. Duncan". In full: "Thank you so much for your kind letter of November 5th and the invitation to visit your school. Due, however, to a very busy schedule which keeps me out on the West Coast most of the time, it would not be possible for me to plan a visit to your school at this time. I do hope you understand. I am sending two photos as you requested, along with me [sic] love, thanks and appreciation for having thought of me. God's blessings always. Very sincerely and with love." Pearl Bailey (1918-1990), a jazz singer and Broadway star, made her Broadway debut in 1946, in the musical St. Louis Woman; her performance resulted in an award for most promising newcomer. In the 1960s, she returned to nightclub singing, and appeared frequently on television; one of her most notable appearances was on the 1966 special Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey on Broadway.Bailey was named to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1976, and awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1988.
