PEARL BUCK
Her handwritten letter supporting educator James Yen
Autograph Note signed: "Pearl S. Buck", 1p, 4¾x7¼. No place, no date. No addressee. In full: "James Yen is really responsible for this book. He has developed a method for teaching people to read and write, to understand the laws of health, and to understand self-government, which might unite the world's peoples." PEARL S. BUCK (1892-1973), born to Presbyterian missionaries, spent the first forty years of her life in China, the setting of many of her books. Her second novel, The Good Earth, won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize, and Buck also won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature for her epic works about China. She later wrote about other Asian nations, including India and Korea. Among Buck's published works is a nonfiction "dialogue" titled Tell the People: Talks with James Yen About the Mass Education Movement (1945). YEN YENGCHU (1890-1990), better known in the West as JAMES YEN, began a literacy program for Chinese workers in 1918. Later, he broadened this "mass education movement" to include job training, health education and citizenship training. Yen left China after the communist victory there (1949), but continued to promote mass education, first in Taiwan and later in other countries, most notably the Philippines. Fine condition.
